Fit is set by torso length, not height: measure from the bony bump at the base of your neck to the top of your hip bones and match that to the size chart. The hipbelt should carry most of the load. Volume follows trip length and season: 40 to 50 L for a fair-weather weekend, 60 L or more for longer or colder trips. Backpacking Packs: frequently asked questions

How do I measure my torso for a backpacking pack?

Have someone measure from the C7 vertebra, the bony bump where your neck meets your shoulders, down to the line between the tops of your hip bones. Match that figure to the brand's size chart; Osprey lists ranges for S/M and L/XL. If you fall between sizes, an adjustable harness helps.

How many litres do I need for a backpacking trip?

A fair-weather weekend usually fits in 40 to 50 L with compact gear. Trips of three to five days, cold-weather sleeping bags or a bear canister push you to 60 to 70 L. Lighter, smaller gear lets you carry a smaller pack.

What is the difference between men's and women's backpacks?

Women's packs usually have shorter torso ranges, narrower shoulder straps and differently shaped hipbelts. Anyone can use either; choose the one that fits your torso and hips best. Try the pack loaded with 7 to 10 kg to judge comfort.
