Protective Gear & Pads

Protective Gear & Pads: frequently asked questions

What should I look for on a football helmet?

New helmets that meet the NOCSAE standard carry a permanent "Meets NOCSAE Standard" seal on the outside rear of the shell, which Football Canada's equipment guidance points coaches to. Since 2017 the standard has required each helmet maker to set a recertification interval, so a used helmet has to be reconditioned and recertified by a licensed reconditioner to keep that certification. Use facemasks and chin straps the helmet maker lists as compatible.

How should a padded football girdle fit?

A girdle should be snug like a compression short, so the hip, thigh and tailbone pads stay in place when the player runs and is tackled. Most brands size by waist measurement, so measure rather than going by pant size. When the player crouches, the pads should still sit over the hip bones and tailbone.

Are volleyball knee pads the same as basketball knee pads?

Not quite. Volleyball pads have a thicker foam cushion over the kneecap for diving and landing on hard floors. Basketball knee pads are usually a longer compression sleeve with lighter padding, for players who want less bulk. Pick the style that matches how often the knee actually meets the floor in your sport.
