Snowshoes

Snowshoes for groomed trails, rolling forest paths and steep backcountry climbs are gathered here, in kids' and teen sizes as well as 22- and 25-inch adult pairs. MSR, Tubbs and Retrospec are the main names, and kits from Odoland and Retrospec add trekking poles or gaiters.

Size by total load: your body weight plus pack and winter clothing, matched to the weight range on the listing. Longer decks float better in the deep, dry powder found across much of Canada, while 22-inch shoes are easier to turn on packed trails, and MSR's add-on tails give extra flotation. Terrain decides the traction. Trail models such as the MSR Evo Trail use steel crampons, while backcountry shoes like the MSR Lightning Ascent add perimeter traction and a heel lift for climbing.
