Field Hockey: frequently asked questions

Why are most field hockey gloves made for the left hand only?

Under the FIH Rules of Hockey, the head of the stick must be flat on its left-hand side only, and players must not play the ball with the back of the stick, so there are no left-handed sticks. Players normally hold the top of the stick with the left hand, which leaves those knuckles exposed in tackles and on reverse-stick plays. That is why the GRAYS, STX, GRYPHON, F HS and IPERFORM gloves here are left-hand models.

How do I size field hockey shin guards?

Sit with the knee bent at about 90 degrees and measure from just below the kneecap to the top of the ankle bone. The guard should cover most of that length without touching the knee or limiting ankle movement, and it should stay in place when the player runs. Osaka's sizing guide suggests choosing the larger size when between two. Shin guard sleeves or socks under field hockey socks help keep guards from slipping.

Are orange practice balls the same as a match ball?

Not quite. The FIH Rules of Hockey set a match ball at 156 to 163 grams with a circumference of 224 to 235 mm, hard with a smooth surface. The Champion Sports orange balls in this range are hollow, lightweight practice balls that suit drills, younger players and backyard work, and the bright colour is easy to find on grass. For school or club games, use the ball your league specifies.
