Begin with your valves: most pumps here work with both Presta and Schrader, but check older heads before you buy. Bike Pumps: frequently asked questions

Presta or Schrader: which pump head do I need?

Presta valves are narrower, about 6 mm, with a small lock nut you unscrew before inflating; Schrader valves are about 8 mm and match car tire valves. Most current pumps have dual or self-adjusting heads, and Topeak's SmartHead and TwinHead upgrade kits can refit many older Topeak floor pumps.

Do I need a separate shock pump for my suspension?

Yes, if you have an air-sprung fork or rear shock. Suspension runs a small air volume at high pressure, up to around 300 PSI, so a shock pump uses a precise gauge and bleed valve that tire pumps don't have.

Can a CO2 inflator replace my mini pump?

CO2 fills a tire in seconds, but each cartridge is a single shot, so you can run out on a bad day. Many riders carry a CO2 inflator plus a mini pump as backup, and check airline rules before flying with cartridges.
