A good sledding hill needs very little gear, but the right ride depends on who is going down it. What size snow tube should I buy?

Tubes around 36 inches suit young children riding alone. Most teens and adults are comfortable on 44 to 48 inch tubes, and two-rider tubes are larger still. Always check the listed weight capacity against the heaviest rider, not just the diameter.

Snow tube, saucer or foam sled: which is better?

Snow tubes are the most cushioned and work well on packed hills, but they spin and are difficult to steer. Saucers are light and fast with almost no steering. Foam sleds ride lower, feel more controllable and suit kids who want to sit or lie on their stomachs.

Why does my snow tube look flat once we get outside?

Air contracts in the cold, so a tube inflated firmly in a warm house softens after a few minutes in the snow. Inflate it, let it sit outside briefly, then top it up with a hand or electric pump. Avoid over-inflating it indoors, which strains the seams.
