Hockey Goalie Equipment

This range is built around the parts goalies replace through a season and the gear for getting started in ball hockey. For young street goalies there are Franklin Sports goalie sets in youth and junior sizes, including the Comp100 and SX Comp 100 sets with leg pads and gloves, plus youth goalie masks from Franklin and Mylec. For upkeep there are Buttendz Sentry knob grips, mask harnesses and slider clips from TronX, Motionchic, GY and Fix My Gear, leather knee straps from A&R Sports, Terry's Twig pad wax, mask sweat bands and CCM 5000 Series practice jerseys cut to fit over pads.

On neck protection, know the two styles: clear polycarbonate throat guards from GY, IMIKEYA and DECHOUS cover the front of the throat, while collar guards like the VPRO and Aegis Interceptor wrap around the neck. Under Hockey Canada rules a mask attachment does not replace a BNQ-certified throat protector in minor and female hockey, so look for the BNQ logo. On ice, the helmet and mask must be CSA-certified; see helmets and face protection. Nets and balls are in ball and street hockey.

Hockey Goalie Equipment: frequently asked questions

Does a goalie still need a neck guard if the mask has a dangler?

Yes, in Hockey Canada play. Rule 3.6(c) requires a BNQ-certified throat protector for players registered in minor and female hockey, and states that goaltenders who wear an attachment to the mask or helmet designed to protect the throat must still wear a BNQ-certified throat protector. A clear polycarbonate dangler can be worn in addition, but check the neck guard itself for the BNQ certification logo before buying.

Can my child wear a street hockey goalie mask on the ice?

Only if it is certified for ice hockey. Hockey Canada Rule 3.6(b) requires all players, including goaltenders, to wear a CSA-certified hockey helmet with a CSA-certified facial protector securely attached and not altered. A goalie head-and-face protector carries a blue CSA sticker (type D1 or 3), and the CSA sticker must stay on and be visible during play. Masks sold for street hockey, like the Franklin Glory, are for ball hockey unless the listing shows CSA certification.

Are there size limits on goalie pads and sticks in Canada?

Yes. Hockey Canada Rule 3.5(b) limits goalie leg pads to 27.94 cm (11 in.) wide and 96.52 cm (38 in.) long, measured on the goaltender. Rule 3.3(c) limits a goalie stick to 1.4 m (55 in.) from heel to the end of the shaft, with a blade 3 to 3.5 in. wide (up to 4.5 in. at the heel). Rule 3.3(d) also requires the end of the shaft to be covered, which is what knob grips like the Buttendz Sentry do.
