The range spans lightweight UPF 50 Buff CoolNet tubes for summer, merino and fleece styles for winter, rechargeable heated gaiters, under-helmet balaclavas such as the Burton Burke Hood, and The North Face WindWall gaiter with its wind-resistant panel.

Choose the fabric for the season: merino stays warm when damp and resists odour, fleece adds warmth on still, cold mornings, and a wind-resistant panel helps on a chairlift. Thin polyester dries fastest during summer activity. A balaclava is the better pick under a ski or snowmobile helmet, while an open tube is easier to pull up and down. What is the difference between a neck gaiter and a balaclava?

A neck gaiter is an open tube that covers the neck and can be pulled over the chin and nose. A balaclava also covers the head and ears with an opening for the face, which makes it warmer and better suited to wearing under a helmet.

Can a cut-resistant neck gaiter replace a hockey neck guard?

Only if it is certified. Hockey Canada's playing rules make a BNQ-certified neck protector compulsory for players registered in minor and female hockey, so look for the BNQ certification logo on the product before using it in organized hockey.

How do I wash a merino or Buff-style gaiter?

Most can be machine washed cold on a gentle cycle and air dried; skip fabric softener, which can reduce wicking. Merino needs washing less often than synthetic fabrics because it resists odour.
