Figure Skates & Accessories

Figure Skates & Accessories: frequently asked questions

How should figure skates fit?

Snug through the heel and ankle, with room to wiggle the toes slightly but no lifting at the heel when you bend your knees. Many figure skate brands size smaller than street shoes, so measure the foot length and check the maker's chart. For growing children, adjustable skates such as A AMERICAN or Nattork cover a range of sizes, but set them to the current foot, not the next size up.

Do new figure skates need sharpening?

Most new skates leave the factory with only a basic edge, so a first sharpening at a pro shop usually improves grip and control. Ask for a shop that sharpens figure blades, because the toe pick must not be ground down. After that, sharpen when the blades start to slide out on turns or stops, which depends on how often and where you skate.

What is the difference between hard guards and soakers?

Hard guards, such as Guardog or SKATE GURU, protect the edges while you walk on rubber floors to and from the ice; always take them off before stepping on the ice. Soakers are soft fabric covers that absorb moisture. After skating, wipe the blades dry and store them in soakers rather than hard guards, which can trap water and cause rust.
