Compatibility comes before everything else. Match the speed count across cassette, chain and shifter, so an 11-speed SHIMANO 105 cassette runs with an 11-speed chain from SHIMANO or KMC. Check your rear hub's freehub body (Shimano HG, SRAM XD or Micro Spline) before choosing a cassette, and confirm your derailleur's capacity can handle the largest cog. Older bikes with threaded freewheel hubs take screw-on freewheels rather than cassettes. SRAM Eagle chains and PowerLock links serve 12-speed SRAM drivetrains. Bike Parts: frequently asked questions

How do I know which cassette fits my bike?

Check three things: the speed count of your shifter, the freehub standard on your rear wheel, and the largest cog your rear derailleur supports. A road short-cage derailleur may not handle a wide mountain range such as 11-36T. The derailleur model number will tell you its maximum cog size.

When should I replace my bike chain?

Measure it with a chain checker. Park Tool advises replacing 11- and 12-speed chains at or just before 0.5% wear, and 5- to 10-speed chains at or just before 0.75%. Waiting longer wears the cassette and chainrings, which cost more to replace.

Can I mix Shimano and SRAM parts?

Some parts mix well: 11-speed road cassettes and chains from the two brands are commonly interchanged. Shifters and derailleurs use different cable-pull ratios, though, so pair each shifter with a derailleur from the same system. Check the maker's compatibility chart before buying.
