Start with how it mounts. Saddle, frame and handlebar bags strap straight to the bike, while panniers and trunk bags need a rear rack, either bolted to the frame or clamped to the seatpost. Load limits run from about 20 lb on some seatpost racks to well over 50 lb on frame-mounted carriers. A 1–2 L top-tube bag holds a phone and snacks; a 30 L pannier can take a laptop. Do I need a rack to carry bags on my bike?

Only for panniers and rear trunk bags, which hook or strap onto a rack. Handlebar, top-tube, frame and saddle bags attach directly with straps or quick-release mounts. If your bike has no rack mounts, a seatpost-clamp rack is the usual alternative, though it carries a lighter load.

What's the difference between waterproof and water-resistant bike bags?

Waterproof bags typically use roll-top closures and sealed seams to keep out steady rain and road spray. Water-resistant bags rely on coated fabric and zippers, which shed showers but can let water in during a long wet ride. For year-round commuting, a roll-top design or a bag with a rain cover is worth having.

Will a frame bag fit my bike?

Measure the inside of your front triangle, along the top tube and down the seat tube, and compare it with the bag's dimensions. Small bikes and full-suspension frames have less room, and a large bag can block bottle cages. Top-tube bags are the easy alternative when space is tight.
