Hockey Protective Gear

Body protection for ice, roller and dek hockey. Neck protection is the biggest group: BNQ-labelled collars like the Bauer NLP7 and NLP21 and the CCM 600 and 900, plus compression shirts with built-in neck collars from Shock Doctor, Bauer, TronX and EALER. You will also find jock shorts and jock pants with cups from Bauer, CCM, CHAMPRO and EALER, Sher-wood 5030 and Winnwell shoulder and elbow pads, gloves from Winnwell, VPRO and BARNETT, and first-season kits such as the Bauer Vapor X-Tend youth kit and the Winnwell youth set with bag.

Size by measurement, not age: neck guards by neck circumference, jocks by waist, shin pads by length. Shoulder caps should sit on top of the shoulders with arm pads meeting the elbow pads. For minor hockey, look for the BNQ logo on the neck guard itself; a clear goalie dangler does not replace it. Mylec and Franklin pads are made for street hockey. Finish the kit with helmet parts and face shields and our kids' equipment checklist.

                                                                                                      Is a neck guard mandatory in Canadian minor hockey?

                                                                                                      Yes. Hockey Canada Rule 3.6 requires a BNQ-certified throat protector for players registered in minor and female hockey, and goaltenders who use a throat attachment on their mask must still wear one. Look for the BNQ logo on the product itself; a neck-guard shirt only meets the rule if its collar is BNQ-certified. Altering a throat protector voids the certification. Hockey Canada notes these protectors are designed against cuts, not impacts to the neck.

                                                                                                      How should hockey shin pads fit?

                                                                                                      Hockey Canada's equipment guide says shin pads generally come in junior/youth sizes of 7 to 12 inches and senior sizes of 13 to 18 inches. The kneecap should sit centred in the pad's cap, and the calf padding should wrap around the lower leg. A pad that is too short leaves a gap above the skate; one that is too long can be uncomfortable and restrict the ankle and knee. Replace cracked pads, and fit hockey pants to cover about two inches of the pad's top padding.

                                                                                                      Should I buy jock shorts or jock pants, and how are they sized?

                                                                                                      Both hold a protective cup, and most have Velcro tabs to keep hockey socks up. Shorts stop at mid-thigh; pants run full length, which some players prefer under their socks and shin pads. Compression styles from EALER, CHAMPRO and Bauer fit tighter than loose mesh versions from CCM and Bauer Core. Hockey Canada's guide says supports are sized by waist and should keep the cup in place without restricting movement. Replace a cracked cup right away.
