Thickness sets the season. A 3/2 mm full suit (3 mm on the torso, 2 mm in the arms and legs) suits summer lake swims and paddling in much of Canada, while ocean surf on either coast and spring or fall sessions call for thicker neoprene plus a hood and boots. Shorties in 2.5 to 3 mm neoprene suit warm-water snorkelling trips. Back-zip suits are the easiest to put on. Fit should be snug with no gaps at the lower back or armpits; kids' suits use numbered sizes, so check height and weight on the chart. Finish the setup with neoprene boots and socks.

Wetsuits: frequently asked questions

What do wetsuit thickness numbers like 3/2 mean?

The first number is the neoprene thickness on the torso and the second is the thickness in the arms and legs, in millimetres. A thicker core keeps you warm while thinner limbs allow easier paddling. A single number, such as 3 mm, means the same thickness throughout.

How tight should a wetsuit be?

Snug like a second skin when dry, with no loose folds at the lower back, knees or underarms. You should still be able to raise your arms and squat without strain across the shoulders. If water rushes in and out as you move, the suit is too big.

How do I care for a wetsuit?

Rinse it in fresh water after every session, especially after salt water or a chlorinated pool. Dry it inside out in the shade on a wide hanger, and avoid hot water, direct sun and sharp folds, which break down neoprene over time.
