Dumbbells

Dumbbells for home gyms, garage set-ups and walking workouts, from light neoprene and foam-covered hand weights to cast-iron hex pairs, urethane heads and full sets with racks. The head material shapes the rest. Rubber-coated hex dumbbells from CAP and Yes4All do not roll and are kinder to floors, neoprene weights from Portzon and RBX are easy to grip for light work, and urethane resists chipping and gives off little odour in a basement.

Handle and progression come next. Knurled chrome handles hold better when hands get sweaty, while contoured grips suit lighter weights. If space is tight, a CAP plate-loaded handle or a dial-adjustable set replaces a row of pairs. Buying several pairs? Keep them off the floor with our dumbbell racks.

Brands include CAP, Portzon and Fitvids.

Dumbbells: frequently asked questions

What dumbbell weights should I start with?

Choose a weight you can lift for 8 to 12 controlled reps with good form, where the last couple of reps feel challenging. Most people need at least two or three pairs, a lighter one for shoulder and arm work and a heavier one for squats, lunges and rows.

Hex, neoprene or urethane: what is the difference?

Hex dumbbells have flat sides so they stay put on the floor and work for push-ups and renegade rows. Neoprene-coated weights are light, colour-coded and comfortable for cardio and toning, while urethane-coated heads resist chipping and odour better than standard rubber.

How often does Canada's guideline suggest strength training?

The Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for adults recommend muscle-strengthening activities using major muscle groups at least twice a week, alongside regular moderate to vigorous activity. Dumbbells are one convenient way to do that at home.
