Tents

Tents and shelters for camping across Canada: Coleman dome and cabin tents for drive-in sites, lightweight two-person backpacking domes, models from Naturehike, Kelty and MSR, plus UPF 50+ beach sun shelters, privacy shower tents, screen houses and replacement stakes. It covers first-time car campers through paddlers and hikers heading into the backcountry.

Capacity ratings assume people packed shoulder to shoulder, so size up by one person if you bring gear or a dog inside. Check the season rating: three-season tents handle spring to fall, while snow load and strong winds call for a four-season design with sturdier poles. A full-coverage rainfly and a waterproof floor matter more than a single high number on the spec sheet. Weigh the packed tent if you will carry it over portages. Our how to choose a tent guide walks through each step, and tent footprints protect the floor.

Brands include HG, unp and ONETIGRIS.

In this range: sun shelters, tent stakes, footprints, privacy shelters and tent tarps.

Tents: frequently asked questions

What waterproof rating should a tent have?

Waterproofing is quoted as hydrostatic head in millimetres. Around 1,500 mm is generally treated as the starting point for waterproof fly fabric and handles showers, while 3,000 mm or more holds up better in sustained rain. Floors are usually rated higher than the fly because body weight presses them into wet ground.

Do I need a tent footprint?

A footprint is a ground sheet that protects the tent floor from abrasion and punctures, which extends the tent's life on rocky or gravel sites. Choose one slightly smaller than the floor so rain cannot collect between the layers and run underneath.

Can I use a three-season tent in winter?

Three-season tents work for cool spring and fall nights, but they are not built for heavy snow or strong winter wind. For winter camping, choose a four-season tent with stronger poles, less mesh and a fly that reaches close to the ground.
