Ice Skates

Ice Skates: frequently asked questions

Are adjustable ice skates a good idea for kids?

For children who are still growing, yes. Each pair covers a range of about four sizes, such as 10C–13C or 5–8, and the toe section extends as the foot grows, so you buy less often. Pick the range that covers your child's current size with room to grow, and recheck the setting at the start of each season with the heel sitting snugly at the back.

Should I buy figure skates in my shoe size?

Not necessarily. Figure skate makers such as Jackson Ultima use their own size charts, and Jackson notes its charts are a guideline and recommends a fitting at an authorized retailer when possible. Measure both feet in the socks you will skate in and size to the longer foot.

Do new skates need sharpening before the first skate?

Many recreational skates arrive factory-sharpened, though the edge can be light. If new blades slide sideways on turns, a local pro shop can sharpen them; tell the sharpener whether they are figure or hockey blades, since a figure blade's toe pick changes how it is handled. Blade guards protect the edges when walking off the ice.
