Do I need a licence to drive a boat in Canada?

Anyone operating a motorized pleasure craft must carry proof of competency on board, whatever the boat's length or engine power, and that includes small boats with electric motors. The usual proof is the Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC), which is good for life. A completed rental boat safety checklist covers you for a rental from a company. Proof of competency isn't required on the waters of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

Can I use a US Coast Guard–approved lifejacket in Canada?

Only if it carries the new shared label. Lifejackets and PFDs with the new approval labels are approved in both Canada and the United States. Devices with older labels can still be used, but only in the country that approved them, so an older US-only label doesn't count in Canada. Look for a Transport Canada approval number before you buy.

How do I choose a replacement propeller?

Match the spline count and engine range first. For example, many Mercury outboards from 135 to 300 HP use a 15-spline hub. Then match diameter and pitch: keep your current pitch unless the engine isn't reaching its rated wide-open-throttle RPM, because lowering pitch raises RPM and raising pitch lowers it. Aluminum props cost less to replace after a rock strike, while stainless steel props last longer.
