Kids' Ice Skates

Kids' ice skates here are made for young skaters taking their first laps at the community rink, on a backyard surface or at lessons, in sizes from toddler to youth. Most of the range is adjustable, so one skate extends across three or four sizes as feet grow. Check the size span before you order and set it to the child's current foot, not the size they will grow into.

Look for reinforced ankle support and a heel that stays locked in place. A plush lining makes cold mornings more comfortable. Nattork, LEVYTEMP and MammyGol offer adjustable models in several colours. For more on fit, read our hockey skate sizing guide.

Brands include Nattork, LEVYTEMP and MammyGol.

Kids' Ice Skates: frequently asked questions

How should an adjustable kids' skate fit?

Set the length so the toes lightly touch the front when standing, then bend the knees: the toes should pull back slightly and the heel should not lift. A skate set too long gives poor ankle control, so re-check the setting every few months as the child grows.

Does my child need a helmet for skating lessons?

Skate Canada's helmet policy requires all CanSkate and Adult CanSkate participants up to and including Stage 5 to wear a CSA-approved hockey helmet on the ice. Other programs set their own rules, so check with your club or rink before the first session.

Do new kids' skates need sharpening?

Some models are sold pre-sharpened, which is fine for a beginner's first sessions. Once the blades stop gripping on turns, a skate shop can sharpen them, and blade guards protect the edges when walking off the ice.
