Core thickness is the first choice. A 13 mm core feels livelier and adds pace, while a 16 mm core absorbs more and gives extra control at the kitchen line. Shape comes next: elongated paddles add reach and leverage on serves, and wider standard shapes offer a more forgiving sweet spot. Grip circumference, usually about 4 to 4 ½ inches on adult paddles, and overall weight decide comfort through a long session. If you plan to enter sanctioned events, confirm the model is listed as passing on the USA Pickleball approved paddle list. Pickleball Paddles: frequently asked questions

Do I need a USA Pickleball-approved paddle to play in Canada?

Not for casual games. For Pickleball Canada sanctioned tournaments, the paddle must appear with a pass on the USA Pickleball Approved Paddle List; models marked as failed or not tested are not eligible. Check the exact model on the online list before entering an event.

Fibreglass or carbon fibre face: which should I pick?

Fibreglass faces flex more, which adds pop and power on drives. Carbon faces are stiffer and give a more controlled, consistent feel, and textured carbon helps with spin. Many players pick by feel, so starting with a mid-priced paddle in either material is reasonable.

What paddle weight is right for me?

Most adult paddles weigh about 7 to 8.5 oz (200 to 240 g). Lighter paddles are quicker for fast exchanges at the net and less tiring over long sessions. Heavier paddles add drive and stability but need more effort to manoeuvre.
