Swimming: frequently asked questions

Is a swim vest or float suit the same as a lifejacket?

No. The Canadian Paediatric Society notes that water wings, neck rings, swimsuits with built-in floats and other swim toys are not safety devices. For boating, children need a lifejacket or PFD approved by Transport Canada, the Canadian Coast Guard or Fisheries and Oceans Canada, sized for the child's weight with all straps fastened.

Should I choose clear or mirrored goggle lenses?

Clear lenses give the clearest view in indoor pools and low light. Mirrored and smoke lenses cut glare on bright outdoor pools and lakes. If you swim in both, a light tint is a reasonable middle ground.

How do I check that goggles will fit before using the strap?

Press the eyecups gently against your eye sockets without the strap on. A good fit holds suction for a second or two. If one side keeps popping off, try a narrower or wider frame, or a model with a softer seal.
