Better Boat Gelcoat Polishing Compound is a machine-applied fiberglass polish that removes light-to-medium oxidation, reduces fine scratches and swirl marks, and delivers a high-gloss, wet-look finish ready for a final wax.
If your boat's gelcoat looks dull from sun exposure, light oxidation, or minor surface damage, this polishing compound was formulated to bring back clarity and shine without heavy sanding. It works as a one-step restorer on newer or lightly oxidized boats and as the follow-up to a heavier rubbing compound on neglected or chalky gelcoats. The formula is silicone- and wax-free, creating the ideal surface for a finishing polish or wax of your choice.
You’ll notice improved gloss and reduced hazing immediately when using a variable-speed polisher with the correct pad. The compound cuts quickly yet finishes clean, so most panels only need one pass for visible improvement. For best results, finish with a light polishing pass to refine the gloss.
This compound is optimized to handle cosmetic surface issues like hazing, mild oxidation, fine scratches, and swirl marks common on gelcoat and painted fiberglass. It is not designed to remove deep gouges, structural damage, or heavily chalked surfaces without prior rubbing compound or mechanical sanding.
Apply a small amount to a clean foam or microfiber polishing pad and work in manageable panels. Use moderate pressure with a rotary or dual-action polisher, wipe residue with a clean microfiber, and inspect. If needed, repeat with a finer pad or follow with a finishing polish for ultimate gloss.
Because the compound is free from waxes and silicones, it leaves a clean, receptive surface for any protective topcoat. Apply your preferred marine polish or wax after polishing; those products will bond better and deliver longer-lasting protection and enhanced depth of shine.
Who is this for: This Better Boat Gelcoat Polishing Compound is aimed at boat owners, detailers, and marinas that want a practical, machine-applied solution to restore faded or mildly oxidized fiberglass and gelcoat. It suits weekend boaters refreshing seasonal shine, professional detailers refining a final finish, and anyone prepping gelcoat for a protective wax or polish. Not intended to replace structural gelcoat repair—use it for cosmetic restoration and finishing tasks.
Q: Can I use this by hand or do I need a machine?
A: It’s formulated for machine polishing for best results; hand application can help small spots but won’t match machine-cut or finish.
Q: Should I follow with wax or a marine polish?
A: Yes — the compound is wax-free and prepares the surface for a marine polish or wax to seal and protect the shine.
