Cold Steel Trench Hawk Tactical Throwing Axe — Flat Dark Earth, 3.5" Blade, 19" Handle

The Cold Steel 90PTHF Trench Hawk is a 29-ounce tactical throwing axe with a 3.5" blade and 19" handle designed for camp tasks, throwing sport, and general cutting needs.

Built to balance durability, impact absorption, and portability, this Trench Hawk blends a drop-forged 1055 carbon steel head with a lightweight polypropylene handle and an included Secure-Ex sheath. Its wedge-style spike and sharpened cutting edge make it versatile for camping, light woodworking, and target throwing while the differentially-hardened head preserves a keen edge and a shock-absorbing body. The flat dark earth finish reduces glare and complements outdoor gear, while the molded handle focuses on grip and control.

How does the Trench Hawk perform for throwing and target practice?

The axe is intended for throwing sports as well as utility use. Differential hardening gives the edge hardness for penetration while the softer steel behind it absorbs shock on impact, helping the head stay intact through repeated throws. Its overall weight and 19" handle create a predictable flight path for intermediate throwers.

• 29-ounce overall weight for stable rotations
• 3.5" sharpened blade for consistent sticking
• Wedge-style spike offers an alternate sticking point
• Drop-forged 1055 carbon steel for balanced toughness

Is this axe suitable for camping, cutting, and utility tasks?

Yes—the Trench Hawk is sized for common outdoor chores without being unwieldy. The sharp cutting edge and sturdy head handle light chopping, limbing, and small splitting tasks, while the spike can help with prying or creating leverage. The polypropylene handle keeps weight low and resists the elements better than untreated wood.

• Carbon steel head for durable cutting performance
• Polypropylene handle for lightweight, weather-resistant grip
• 3.5" blade suitable for batoning and light cutting
• Included Secure-Ex sheath for safe transport and storage

How durable and safe is the construction?

The axe uses a drop-forged, differentially-hardened 1055 carbon steel head to balance edge retention with impact absorption. The handle material resists cracking and reduces overall weight, and the Secure-Ex sheath protects the blade during transport and keeps the spike covered when not in use. Regular maintenance—cleaning, drying, and oiling the blade—extends longevity.

• Drop-forged construction for consistent strength
• Differential hardening preserves edge and shock absorption
• Secure-Ex sheath for blade safety and secure carry
• Flat dark earth finish lowers reflection and adds protection
