Dakine HELI Backpack 12L, One Size, Griffin - Lightweight alpine ski and snowboard pack

The Dakine HELI BACKPACK 12L in Griffin is a compact alpine pack made for efficient ski and snowboard carry with tool storage and quick-dry comfort.

Built to move fast in the mountains, this 12-liter Dakine pack balances low weight and smart organization. It delivers multiple carry options for snowboards, skis or splitboards, stores avalanche tools and shovel blades securely, and uses a breathable padded back panel to keep you comfortable on approach hikes. The Griffin colorway gives a muted, easy-to-match look for technical outerwear.

How does the pack carry a snowboard or skis without getting in the way?

The HELI BACKPACK 12L offers both vertical and horizontal snowboard carry plus a diagonal ski/splitboard option so you can adapt carry style to terrain and personal preference. Attachment points are positioned to keep the load close to your center of gravity, reducing swing while hiking or bootpacking.

• Vertical snowboard carry with a low-profile strap to secure boards upright.
• Horizontal snowboard carry option for easier transport on flat ground.
• Diagonal ski/splitboard carry keeps gear stable on steep approaches.
• Attachment hardware designed to stay secure while moving.

What avalanche and snow-tool storage does it provide?

Organized tool storage is built into the main compartment so your shovel and probe stay separate from clothing and other items. Dedicated sleeves make it faster to access tools in an emergency drill or when rearranging gear at basecamp.

• Snow tools sleeves inside the main compartment for quick, orderly stowage.
• Exterior shovel blade carry keeps bulky blades accessible and out of the main space.
• Interior layout minimizes tool rattle and protects soft items.
• Space allocated so a probe and compact shovel fit without crowding.

Will the back panel keep me comfortable during long approaches?

The pack uses a quick-dry mesh padded back panel that improves airflow and reduces moisture buildup during aerobic effort. Padding is shaped to sit snugly against your back, distributing pressure evenly and preventing hot spots while climbing or skinning.

• Quick-dry mesh moves moisture away from skin for comfort on long tours.
• Padded panel shapes to the back to spread load and reduce strain.
• Low-profile construction avoids bulk while retaining cushioning.
• Materials chosen for durability in cold, wet conditions.

How much can I realistically carry in a 12L alpine pack?

A 12-liter capacity gives you enough room for essentials: an extra layer, water, snacks, a compact avalanche kit and repair items, while keeping the overall size light and agile. It’s ideal when you want mobility and only the gear required for a single-day ride or a committed line.

• Space for a midweight jacket, gloves, and a small first-aid kit.
• Room for a dedicated probe, compact shovel, and companion rescue items.
• Pockets and sleeves help separate wet weather layers from tools.
• Fits day-trip essentials without encouraging overpacking.

Who is this for? The Dakine HELI BACKPACK 12L is aimed at skiers, splitboarders and snowboarders who prioritize nimble movement and organized gear access on single-day alpine missions. It suits riders who need secure, multiple-carry options and dedicated tool storage but don’t want the bulk of a full touring pack. Choose this if you value low weight, fast tool retrieval and a pack profile that stays close to your body on steep terrain.
