MSR MiniWorks EX water purifier pump With Updated Storage Bag, ceramic/carbon microfilter + Aquatabs

The MSR MiniWorks EX is a compact pump-style microfilter paired with chlorine-based Aquatabs to deliver filtered and chemically purified water for backpacking, travel, and emergency use.

Designed for hikers, international travelers, and anyone who needs dependable water treatment off-grid, the MiniWorks EX combines MSR's ceramic/carbon microfilter pump with a supply of purification tablets to address particles, bacteria, protozoa and viral risk where needed. The pump handles the bulk removal of sediment, taste and organic contaminants at about one liter per minute, while Aquatabs add a chemical barrier against viruses when source-water viral contamination is a concern. The system is compact, repairable, and built for rugged conditions.

How does the MiniWorks EX remove visible dirt, taste and microbes?

The pump uses a replaceable ceramic and activated-carbon element that physically traps particulate and many microorganisms while improving taste and odor. Pumping forces water through the micro-porous ceramic and carbon mediums, delivering treated water to your container at a steady flow.

• Ceramic element captures fine sediment and protozoa.
• Carbon reduces organic compounds, chlorine taste and odors.
• Pump output approximately 1 liter per minute for efficient processing.
• Filter rated to treat up to 2,000 liters before replacement.

When and why should I use the included Aquatabs with the filter?

Aquatabs are a chlorine-based tablet included to add viral protection in settings where viruses may be present — common in some developing regions and densely visited wilderness areas. Use the tablets after filtering when viral contamination is a concern, or as an extra safety step in higher-risk water sources.

• Each tablet treats about 2 quarts (roughly 2 liters) of filtered water.
• Tablets provide chemical disinfection effective against many viruses.
• Combine mechanical filtration with chemical treatment for broader coverage.

How portable and serviceable is the system for long trips?

The MiniWorks EX was built for extended use in the field: it’s lightweight for a pump filter, offers a user-replaceable element, and comes with a storage bag that protects the unit when packed. MSR’s lifetime limited warranty and the option to replace the ceramic/carbon cartridge keep the system practical for multi-season use.

• Pump dimensions roughly 7.5 x 2.75 in and weight about 1 lb (460 g).
• Includes PFAS-free DWR-coated storage bag for gear protection.
• Replaceable filter cartridge extends overall system life.
• Made in the USA with manufacturer’s limited lifetime warranty.

What bottles and containers work with the MiniWorks EX?

The pump is compatible with a range of wide-mouth bottles and hydration bladders (sold separately), making it easy to integrate into your existing water system. Its threaded fittings and flexible hoses connect to common bottle openings and reservoir ports for convenient refilling and storage.

• Works with many wide-mouth water bottles and hydration bladders.
• Includes hoses and fittings for easy transfer into containers.
• Pumps directly into a user container at roughly one liter per minute.

Who is this for: The MSR MiniWorks EX appeals to backpackers, international travelers, outdoor guides, prepper kits, and anyone who needs a robust, repairable water-treatment approach when travelling in remote, high-use, or developing-country locations. Choose this kit if you want a proven mechanical filter with the option to add chemical viral protection for extra peace of mind in uncertain water conditions.
