PACT Mycelium Tabs — 120 Pack wooden fungal discs for faster backcountry waste decomposition

PACT Mycelium Tabs are wooden discs inoculated with mycelium that accelerate decomposition of human waste in backcountry cat-holes, turning waste into soil nutrients while reducing environmental impact.

PACT Mycelium Tabs pair simple field use with biological science to make burying human waste less harmful. Each wooden disc contains living mycelium—the root-like network of fungi—that helps break down fecal matter faster than simple burial alone. These tabs are designed for leave-no-trace practices in camping, backpacking, bikepacking, and other outdoor activities where digging and burying feces is still the accepted option.

How do PACT Mycelium Tabs speed up decomposition?

The mycelium in each tab acts as a natural decomposer, increasing microbial activity around the buried waste. That speeds up breakdown and helps convert organic material into bioavailable nutrients for soil organisms, shortening the time waste remains in recognizable form.

• Wooden discs inoculated with a specific fungal mycelium strain
• Introduces decomposer organisms directly to the cat-hole
• Promotes faster microbial digestion than soil alone

How do I use these tabs in the backcountry?

Using PACT Tabs is straightforward: dig a 6–8 inch cat-hole, do your business, then place three tabs into the hole and fill it completely. Pack out any toilet paper if required by local rules; otherwise the tabs will work alongside soil to reduce lingering waste.

• Dig a 6–8" deep cat-hole in appropriate soil
• Place three PACT Tabs with the feces before backfilling
• Fill the hole thoroughly and disguise the site to discourage animals

Will these tabs make public lands safer and cleaner?

PACT Tabs are formulated to lessen the environmental footprint of buried human waste by reducing persistence and pathogen survival in many conditions, which helps protect waterways and wildlife. By improving the effectiveness of in-ground disposal, they lower the management load on land stewards and support continued access to natural areas.

• Reduces persistence of recognizable waste on trails and campsites
• Helps limit pathogen survival that can reach water sources
• Supports land manager efforts to keep areas open to recreation

Can PACT Tabs be used with other PACT bathroom gear?

Yes—these tabs are made to work on their own or as refills for PACT’s Bathroom Kit family (PACT Kit, PACT Lite, PACT Ultra Lite). They fit seamlessly into a broader low-impact sanitation routine when paired with trowels, wipes, or pack-out solutions.

• Use alone in cat-holes or as refill discs in PACT kits
• Compatible with other low-impact bathroom tools and practices
• Available in a 120-count supply for multiple trips

Who is this for: PACT Mycelium Tabs are intended for campers, hikers, backpackers, bikepackers, and outdoor stewards who practice in-ground fecal disposal and want to reduce their footprint. They suit experienced backcountry users familiar with digging cat-holes, as well as casual overnight visitors who want an easy, science-backed way to improve their waste management. These tabs are not a replacement for pack-out requirements where local regulations prohibit burying human waste.
