Spyderco Sage 5 Lightweight folding pocket knife — 3" CPM S30V PlainEdge, FRN handle, Compression Lock

The Spyderco Sage 5 is a compact, lightweight folding knife with a 3-inch CPM S30V PlainEdge blade, ergonomic FRN handle, and Spyderco’s secure Compression Lock for reliable everyday carry.

Built for users who want high-performance materials without excess bulk, the Sage 5 pairs premium CPM S30V steel with a slim, fiberglass-reinforced nylon handle to keep weight low and durability high. Its full-flat-grind satin blade delivers precise slicing, while the secure Compression Lock mechanism and reversible wire clip make the knife safe and convenient to carry and deploy with one hand.

How sharp and durable is the CPM S30V blade?

CPM S30V is a stainless, powdered metallurgy steel engineered for a strong edge and good corrosion resistance. With a full-flat grind and satin finish, the blade slices cleanly and holds an edge longer than common stainless knives under typical daily tasks.

• High wear resistance for extended edge life
• Good toughness to resist chipping during regular use
• Full-flat grind enhances slicing performance
• Satin finish reduces glare and improves stain resistance

How comfortable and secure is the handle for daily tasks?

The handle uses lightweight FRN scales over nested stainless liners to offer a secure, non-slip grip while minimizing carry weight. Ergonomic shaping supports a natural hand position, and the textured surface helps maintain control in wet or slippery conditions.

• Fiberglass-reinforced nylon for strength and lightness
• Textured pattern aids grip retention
• Nested liners add rigidity without much weight
• Contoured profile reduces hand fatigue during extended use

Is the Sage 5 safe and easy to open/close one-handed?

Yes—the Compression Lock provides a robust lockup while allowing smooth one-handed opening and closing. The lock sits on the spine so it won’t interfere with a standard grip, and the reversible wire clip offers ambidextrous, tip-up carry for convenience.

• Spyderco Compression Lock for dependable blade retention
• Thumb hole enables quick, one-handed deployment
• Reversible wire clip supports left- or right-handed carry
• Tip-up carry keeps blade tip protected in pocket

How portable is the knife for daily carry or travel?

At a 3-inch blade length and with lightweight construction, the Sage 5 balances cutting capability and pocket comfort. It’s small enough for everyday carry yet large enough to tackle common chores from opening packages to cutting cordage.

• 3-inch blade for EDC-friendly size and performance
• Low overall weight reduces pocket bulk
• Slim profile fits most pockets discreetly
• Durable materials stand up to frequent use

Who is this for? The Spyderco Sage 5 suits anyone who wants a high-quality, everyday folding knife that won't weigh them down—outdoor enthusiasts, tradespeople, and city dwellers who appreciate precise cutting performance, dependable locking, and ambidextrous carry options. If you value premium steel, a refined grind for clean cuts, and a secure, ergonomic handle in a compact package, the Sage 5 is designed to meet those needs without unnecessary bulk.
