Bilge Pumps

Bilge pumps keep water out of boat hulls, from automatic 12V submersible pumps and float switches to manual hand pumps for canoes, kayaks and dinghies. Size an electric pump by its flow rating in GPH, remembering that real output drops with lift and hose length. Choose automatic models with a built-in float switch, or pair a standard pump with a separate float switch and a three-way panel so you can also run it manually. Check the discharge diameter against your hose and look for ignition-protected ratings in engine compartments. Brands on offer include Rule, SEAFLO, Johnson Pump and Whale. Bilge Pumps: frequently asked questions

Is a bilge pump required on small boats in Canada?

Transport Canada's Small Vessel Regulations require pleasure craft up to 6 m, including canoes and kayaks, to carry a bailer or manual bilge pump, unless the boat cannot hold enough water to capsize or its compartments are sealed and not readily accessible. Larger boats have their own bilge pumping requirements.

What size bilge pump do I need?

Ratings in GPH are measured with no lift, and installed pumps often deliver much less once lift, hose and voltage drop are added. Choose a pump rated well above the flow you expect, and add a second pump on larger hulls.

Do I need a separate float switch?

Automatic pumps with a built-in float switch turn on by themselves when water rises. Non-automatic pumps need a separate float switch, such as the attwood models, to run without a manual switch.
