Pickleball

New players buying a first paddle set and club regulars moving to a carbon-faced paddle are both covered here, from paddles and balls to court tape, nets, overgrips and bags. Core thickness shapes the feel: 16 mm cores are softer and more controlled at the kitchen line, while 13 to 14 mm cores give more pop on drives. Fibreglass faces are forgiving, and raw carbon faces, found on many JOOLA and Selkirk Sport paddles, add grip for spin. Grip size matters too; 4 1/8 inches is a common circumference.

Match balls to the court. Outdoor balls such as Franklin Sports' X-40 are harder, with 40 small holes to handle wind, while indoor balls like the X-26 are softer, with fewer, larger holes. If you enter sanctioned events, confirm your paddle is approved first. Our pickleball paddle guide walks through the choices, and every model is listed under pickleball paddles.

Brands include JOOLA, Selkirk Sport and Franklin Sports.
