BLACK DIAMOND Capitan Climbing Helmet Astral-Black M/L (23–25in) — Dual‑Density Foam, Extended Coverage

The BLACK DIAMOND Capitan is a lightweight, adjustable climbing helmet that uses dual-density foam and extended coverage to protect your head on rock and alpine routes.

This Astral-Black Capitan helmet blends impact-management materials with a dial-adjust suspension and thoughtful details so climbers get a secure fit, extra side and back coverage, and ventilation for long days on rock or snow. It’s built to accept headlamps, fits over thin hats or balaclavas, and balances protection, comfort, and packability for multi-pitch, trad, and alpine objectives.

How does the Capitan improve protection on technical climbs?

The Capitan combines a dual-density foam liner with increased lateral and rear coverage to help dissipate impact energy while covering vulnerable zones. The helmet’s shape and materials are engineered to meet climbing standards while remaining low-profile for racking and belays.

• Dual-density foam absorbs and spreads impact forces.
• Extended side and back shell provides additional coverage.
• Low-profile design avoids interference with harness and rope work.

Will it fit comfortably with layers or a beanie?

A rear dial and an internal suspension system let you fine-tune the fit quickly, and there’s enough internal volume to accommodate a thin hat or base-layer cap. The retention system keeps the helmet stable during movement and can be adjusted while wearing gloves.

• Rear adjustment dial for easy, precise fit tuning.
• Room to wear a lightweight hat or headliner beneath the helmet.
• Padded straps reduce pressure on cheeks and ears.

How does the Capitan handle ventilation and long-route comfort?

Strategically placed vents promote airflow across the head to reduce heat buildup during approaches or sunny crag sessions. The helmet remains lightweight so you notice less fatigue on long climbs while maintaining protective performance.

• Vent ports positioned for consistent airflow.
• Lightweight construction for reduced neck strain on long efforts.
• Breathable padding helps manage sweat and comfort.

Is it ready for night starts and alpine use?

The Capitan includes integrated clips that secure a headlamp, so you can start before dawn or descend after dusk without jury-rigging light. Its combination of fit, ventilation, and extended coverage makes it suitable for a range of alpine and multi-pitch activities.

• Built-in headlamp clips keep lights secure for early or late movement.
• Durable exterior shell stands up to rope drag and pack wear.
• Designed to perform across sport, trad, and alpine objectives.

Who is this for? The BLACK DIAMOND Capitan in Astral-Black M/L is aimed at climbers who want a versatile, protective helmet that works for everything from sport crags and multi-pitch trad routes to alpine approaches. If you need a comfortable, easily adjustable helmet with extra side and rear coverage and headlamp compatibility, the Capitan is a practical choice for year-round climbing.
