Gerber Gorge Folding Shovel – Black Telescoping Camp Shovel, Carbon-Steel Blade & Rubber Grip, 47.5 cm

The Gerber Gorge Folding Shovel is a compact, telescoping outdoor shovel with a carbon-steel blade and push-button slide that folds down for easy packing and multi-use fieldwork.

Built for campers, overlanders, and drivers who want a lightweight, packable digging tool, the Gorge combines a durable carbon-steel spade head, a fiberglass-filled nylon handle with rubberized grip, and a fast push-button folding mechanism. It ships with a nylon drawstring storage bag and collapses from its full length to a pocketable size so it fits in backpacks, car trunks, or emergency kits.

How does the folding and telescoping system work?

The Gorge uses a push-button slide and a telescoping joint to lock the handle in folded or extended positions quickly. The mechanism is intended for fast transitions between storage and use without tools.

• Push-button slide for secure lock and release.
• Telescoping joint lets the shovel collapse to a compact length.
• Nylon drawstring bag included for protected storage.
• Folds down to save space in packs or vehicle kits.

What tasks is this shovel suited for outdoors and around the car?

Although not a full-size trench shovel, the Gorge handles many light- to medium-duty outdoor chores: emergency digs, clearing around tires, building short bike or trail ramps, and hammering tent stakes using the flat back of the head. Its carbon-steel blade balances durability with weight savings.

• Light snow removal around vehicles and tires.
• Digging tent footings, fire pits, or drainage trenches.
• Trail building and campsite maintenance.
• Blade back doubles as a hammer for stakes and pegs.

How comfortable and durable is the handle and grip?

The handle is made of fiberglass-filled nylon for strength and reduced weight, with a rubberized overgrip to minimize slipping in wet or cold conditions. The open design gives extra room for hand placement and leverage during tougher digs.

• Fiberglass-filled nylon shaft for stiffness and light weight.
• Rubberized overgrip for secure handling in varied conditions.
• Open-handle profile allows different hand positions for leverage.
• Construction resists corrosion and common wear in field use.

Can the blade be maintained or sharpened?

Yes, the Gorge’s carbon-steel spade can be sharpened and cleaned to extend usefulness; periodic maintenance will keep it performing well. The powder-coated or anodized finish helps resist rust, but drying and light oiling after wet use preserves the metal longer.

• Carbon-steel blade accepts sharpening for improved cutting performance.
• Protective finish reduces corrosion in wet environments.
• Wipe and dry after use; apply light oil to bare steel edges when storing.
• Replacement isn’t necessary with basic blade care and responsible use.
