MSR Ultralight Utility Cord Kit — 10 m 1.8 mm Reflective Dyneema Core, 200 lb Strength

The MSR Ultralight Utility Cord Kit is a 10-meter, 1.8 mm reflective cord with a Dyneema core rated to 200 lb, designed for shelter guylines and campsite tasks where low weight and high strength matter.

Lightweight outdoor gear demands materials that balance minimal bulk with dependable strength. MSR engineered this ultralight utility cord to serve as a versatile, packable line for pitching tarps, securing guy points, hanging food, or marking tent guylines after dark. At 10 meters (about 32 feet) and 1.8 mm thickness, the cord gives you ample length without adding noticeable weight, while the Dyneema core provides the tensile performance you need in a compact package.

How will this cord perform when I guy out a tarp?

The cord’s thin profile makes it easy to coil and run through light-line tensioners or webbing, yet the Dyneema core preserves strength under load. Reflective yarn woven into the sheath helps you spot guylines in low light to avoid trips and snags.

• 10 meters (32 ft) length for flexible anchor placement
• 1.8 mm diameter fits small tensioners and cord locks
• 200 lb tensile rating for secure guy points
• Reflective sheath increases nighttime visibility

Can I use it to hang a bear bag or suspend lightweight gear?

Yes — the Dyneema core delivers a high breaking strength relative to its small diameter, making the cord suitable for suspending food bags or other campsite items when used with appropriate knots and hardware. For critical hangs, combine the cord with a cordage bag, carabiner, or abrasion protection to preserve the sheath.

• Dyneema core gives strong load capacity in a thin line
• Use with a carabiner or pulley for efficient hauling
• Avoid sharp edges and use tree protection to prevent damage

Is this cord easy to manage and store in a backpack?

The ultralight construction coils neatly and weighs only a few grams, so it tucks into pockets, gear loops, or the included storage sleeve without bulk. Its reflective weave also means you can leave short sections exposed at night to define pathways or tent lines without additional tape or flagging.

• Compact 10 m length fits into small packs or repair kits
• Thin 1.8 mm diameter reduces space taken in a repair kit
• Reflective fibers double as visibility markers when deployed

What precautions should I take when using this cord?

While the cord is strong for its size, avoid subjecting it to sharp edges, abrasive surfaces, or dynamic shock loads that can weaken fibers. Always inspect for fray or damage before critical use and replace the cord if you detect significant wear.

• Inspect sheath and core before each trip
• Use abrasion protection at contact points with rock or metal
• Do not substitute for life-safety applications like climbing

Who is this for: hikers, backpackers, and minimalist campers who want a lightweight, high-strength cord for routine campsite tasks — guylines, food hangs, gear suspension, and visibility marking at night. If you value compact, multi-use items that save pack space while delivering reliable tensile performance, the MSR Ultralight Utility Cord Kit is a practical addition to your shelter and camp kit.
